Real Madrid star open to Qatar move – ‘It’s a probable destination’

Real Madrid star Dani Carvajal has confirmed he would like to move to Qatari football if he leaves Los Blancos. The 32-year-old has admitted he won't be in the game for much longer, and it appears he has no thoughts of retiring at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carvajal turns 33 in two weeks, and with Real Madrid chasing Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, he could consider a move at some point. He is currently recovering from a torn cruciate ligament in his knee, which will keep him out for a year.

“I am 32 years old, I am no longer a child. What else can I have? Four or five years of football? It's not much, time flies,” he told Esquire. He was also not averse to moving to the Middle East.

“It doesn't seem crazy to me. “I have already said that if I ever leave Real Madrid, I will not play in Europe, I will not compete against Madrid in the Champions League or in Spain.”

Former teammate Joselu Mato is currently playing in Qatar for Al-Gharafa after joining from Real Madrid this summer. Carvajal and Joselu are married to twin sisters Daphne and Melanie, and are now brothers-in-law.

“It would be a likely destination. Joselu says to me: 'I'll wait for you here, I'll save the right back spot for you.' It is a competition where all stadiums are close, there is a very high quality of life. And he has earned it, to receive that important financial reward, which is a spectacular highlight of his career. I am very happy for him, for my sister-in-law and for my cousins,” he explained.

It would be a surprise if Carvajal did not try to return to the Spain squad for the 2026 World Cup, with Pedro Porro and Oscar Mingueza currently his main competitors for the position. Carvajal should return to action around seven months before the World Cup takes place, but if Alexander-Arnold does arrive, minutes could be harder to come by for him as he tries to regain his sharpness.
