Real Madrid to welcome back long-term absentee upon return from winter break

It has been more than 12 months since David Alaba tore his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Real Madrid against Villarreal. His recovery period wasn't expected to last this long, but it eventually comes to an end.

Alaba has been working individually in recent months, but according to Marca he will join the group on Monday when Real Madrid return to training after the winter break. Carlo Ancelotti's side will then start preparing for their rescheduled La Liga match against Valencia, which will be played at the Mestalla next Friday.

Alaba's return has been eagerly anticipated for some time, especially as fellow centre-back Eder Militao is currently out following his second cruciate ligament injury in 15 months. However, it will take several weeks for the Austrian international to get back up to speed, meaning he will not be calling on Real Madrid anytime soon.
