Real Madrid had a disappointing season 2024-25, but there would be some joy if they win the club World Cup. Xabi Alonso's side face Paris Saint-Germain in their semi-final on Wednesday, and the victory would see them progress to the final of this weekend, where they would be confronted with Chelsea.
Victory would be PSG fantastic for Real Madrid because it would keep their hope alive to win the first edition of the newly revamped Club World Cup, but it would also be important for another reason.
A victory would be the club record equal to most victories in one season, according to MD. Currently, 46 is the total that was reached during the 2024-25 campaign, which is the same amount that Real Madrid won in 2011-12 and 2013-24, when Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti were respective.
This season, Real Madrid won 45 of their 67 games played (67% profit percentage), although this has led to zero large trophies that have been won so far – Los Blancos won the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup, but missed in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
For comparison: the Real Madrid side of Mourinho won 46 in 58 games in all matches during the 2011-12 season (79%), because they won La Liga with a very impressive 100 points protected. Ancelotti's side in 2013-14 won 46 in 60 (77%), when they took the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
There is no doubt that the 2024-25 season was very disappointing for Real Madrid, made more by the fact that Barcelona beat a domestic Treble on the way in every competition. But there are signs to be hopeful for the future with Alonso at the helm, and that feeling will be hammered home if PSG will be swept aside on Wednesday – although it will be difficult to do this without the suspended Dean Huijsen.
