Real Madrid has ended a disappointing 2024-25 LA Liga season on a high and won 2-0 against Real Sociedad in the Santiago Bernabeu.
Carlo Ancelotti, who manages his last game as Real Madrid head coach before taking over the national team from Brazil, started with Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric in their last home games for Los Blancos. That was the focus, just like Kylian Mbappe's hunt for the European Golden Boot, which turned out to be a success.
It was a frustrating first half for Mbappe, who was refused several times by La Real goalkeeper Unai Marrero. But just before the interval he was given the goal that was needed to bring him to Viktor Gyokeres at the top of the European Golden Boot classification after he had scored the rebound after his penalty had been saved.
The second half was also a routine for Real Madrid, with La really happy to sit down and invite pressure. An emotional Lucas was removed just after the hour and in 83 minutes the victory was made safe by Mbappe, who shot home from the penalty area after he was played by Vinicius Junior.
Modric was then picked up for a delicious reception – and an honorary guard of both players. He was greeted by a number of his current and former players, including ex-Midfield partner Toni Kroos, who retired last summer.
It was not a good season for Real Madrid, but it was a nice last day when they celebrated Modric, Lucas and Ancelotti. The former couple has not played their last time in the white sweater, because they will both be involved in the club World Cup, but for Ancelotti it is his last arch – he leaves after this game to become the new Brazilian head coach.
