Ref Watch: Arsenal’s slender victory at Man Utd analysed by for EPL referee

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher is back for a new season of ref Watch on Sky Sports News and starts taking a look at the most important incidents of Arsenal's 1-0 win at Man Utd.

Should the winning goal of Riccardo Calafiori have been rejected for Arsenal for an error on goalkeeper Altay Bayindir? Does Matheus Cunha have to have won a penalty after an error by William Saliba?

Dermot also discusses all other important referee discussions of the opening weekend.

“How is that not a punishment?!” | Heated ref Watch -debate on Saliba Challenge on Cunha

Incident: Matheus Cunha went to the ground in the penalty area after a challenge by William Saliba. Did Saliba get the ball? Referee said no punishment.

Dermot says: I was not convinced that it was a punishment. What I would say is if it becomes a penalty, it is someone who will give the referee. VAR will not be involved in this.

Jay Bothoyd on Sky Sports News:

“How is that not a fine? It is a guaranteed fine.

“If it happens on the half line, it's a free kick.

“Saliba has hit his foot and the ball has not gone anywhere. If Saliba is not there, Cunha will not go down. It is a penalty.”

'No error on Bayındır'

Incident: William Saliba was in close contact with Altay Bayındır as Arsenal score at Old Trafford – Was it a mistake?

Dermot says: no mistake. No mistake at all. If there is something, the goalkeeper puts his hand on the player.

Jay Bothoyd on Sky Sports News:

“He has not been strong enough, he has caught out of position and the man took the man the game. If he thinks it's a mistake, go down, at least you have the chance to win a free kick. It's just bad, you have to be stronger.”

'Guehi disrupts – that is the law'

Incident: Ebereechi Eze Free Kick Offen Var after Marc Guehi disrupted the wall.

Dermot says: this is the law. If a wall is set up with three or more players, opposition players must be one meter. Often you see forward in front of the wall. In this case, Guehi is between two players.

Where they are setting up, Guehi is initially not deemed to be in the wall, he is sitting between two players to the right of the wall, but while the ball is kicked, the movement of Guehi to Caicedo is and he is no doubt not a meter.

You don't see it often. Most free kicks do not result in a goal, and because this does, VAR has to check it.

The point was that Caicedo went into the wall and Guehi was in contact with him.

The genius is now out of the bottle.

'VAR is against goals'

Micah Richards said, “There can be no complaints, but it feels like Var is anti-goals.”

Roy Keane added: “Attacking teams must now be aware of this rule. We see players there and always nuisance.

“Guehi almost gone too far by being a nuisance and pushing players. He just had to do it a bit.”

'VAR was rejected incident too quickly'

Incident: Senesi avoids punishment after he seems to deal with the ball as the last defender.

Dermot says: I think this is a really interesting situation. The VAR has viewed and deleted it too quickly for me.

I think he saw the ball of Senesi flying and not watching the second part.

He saw the ball hit the elbow of the knee and stopped looking, he did not search for the second wipe. If he sends the referee to the screen, the referee has all the options. He probably sends Senesi away because huge Ekitike will be gone. The only doubt is it too far from the goal? But this is a class forward.

If it went to the screen, he would have been sent away. It was a mistake and luckily it didn't affect the outcome of the game.

Tottenham 3-0 Burnley

'Dubravka is rightly punished for holding the ball'

Incident: Burnley goalkeeper Dubravka is punished for holding the ball for more than eight seconds, resulting in an opposition.

Dermot says: if you look, he takes too long. I am a bit worried about eight seconds, because we don't want to watch the stop. But he makes no attempt to release the ball.

It is a deterrent. That's why the rule is there. No referee wants to apply that rule, they want keepers to get rid of the ball and keep the game moving faster.
