Ref Watch: Everton’s penalty against Arsenal was more of a foul outside box

Dermot Gallagher says that Everton was lucky to get a penalty in their draw with Arsenal, while the former Premier League referee also threw a number of other controversial calls this weekend.

Everton 1-1 Arsenal

'FRONG OFFER THE BOX'

Incident: Darren England has awarded Everton a penalty in Goodison Park for what looked a soft challenge of Myles Lewis-Skelly on Jack Harrison. VAR agreed with the referee.

Dermot says: “I think if in this case you will give the attacker a mistake, more of the error takes place outside the area. Then he will let him go. I don't think it's a penalty.

“The player's reaction is the key. But it will never be destroyed when it is given on pitch.”

Sue Smith says: “I think it's soft. But Lewis-Skelly falls on him in the area. I think that will never be destroyed. You can see why the referee has given it. He connects with him.”

Stephen Warnock says: “I am still 50/50. I understand why it is given because it is awkward. But if it is not given, I understand that because there is little contact. Would that have been a mistake somewhere else on the field? I think it would do.”

Crystal Palace 2-1 Brighton

'Referee within rights to book'

Incident: Crystal Palace replacement Eddie Nketiah lasted less than 10 minutes on the field in Selhurst Park after collecting two yellow cards.

He wanted a penalty in the second half, but instead he was booked to dive.

Dermot says: “I think the referee is within his right to give a yellow. If there is minimal contact, he tries to mislead the referee? Anthony Taylor felt yes. Because of what happens next, this issue is suddenly lifted.”

Stephen Warnock says: “Nketiah realizes that he probably won't get there, anticipates contact and then goes down. It is probably more of a dive.”

Sue Smith: “It's a hard yellow card.”

'Deserved second yellow'

Incident: Nketiah is then shown a second yellow for a high boot on Jan Paul van Hecke and is rejected.

Dermot says: “He will say that he is unlucky because he looks at the ball and does not see Van Hecke coming, but once you look for your foot, it will be a yellow card for reckless play.”

Sue Smith: “I feel for him because he only looks at the ball. But if your foot is raised so high and you connect with a player, you will probably always be booked. That is a second yellow.”

Fulham 3-2 Liverpool

Should Fulham have been fined?

At Craven Cottage on Super Sunday, Fulham wanted a punishment for this incident, while goalkeeper Cooimhin Kelleher Andreas Pereira eliminates after he played the ball …

Dermot says: “The referee felt as if both players collided. You know that my theory about keepers who come out like this, I always say that if the keeper goes with his legs, he becomes an outfield player. I think it is a mistake and should have been a punishment.”

Stephen Warnock says: “I immediately thought it was a penalty. Kelleher tried to read the direction of the ball, but has taken away a player. It is awkward.”

'No error in the run -up to Sessegnon Equalizer'

Incident: Liverpool defender Ibrahmia Konate appealed to an error on him by Rodrigo Muniz in the construction of Fulham's Equalizer.

Dermot says: “Not for me. Players collide. It is a contact game. Play through, as the referee did, and no reason for the game not to continue.”

Stephen Warnock says: “Nowhere close enough to give a mistake. It was just a tough day in the office for Konate. He lost the flight of the ball.”

Tottenham 3-1 Southampton

'Semi-automated exterior must reduce the waiting time'

Incident: Tottenham thought they had a second goal when Lucas Bergvall put the ball in the net, only for VAR to rule Cristian Romero was offside.

The check lasted four minutes 50 seconds.

Dermot says: “We have had many elongated offside checks during the weekend. Next Saturday it will be different because semi-automated and will eradicate most of it.”

VART BREATS BREAT DEBTS for too long?

Stephen Warnock says: “Fans are now fed up with VAR that goes through decisions with a nice comb. It must be faster. It ruined the atmosphere on grounds and killing the pace of games. That is difficult.”
