After nine first-half goals in the previous two home games, there was a clear focus from Verona to keep things tight and grow into the game.
That approach seemed to work as the visitors were unable to threaten despite dominating possession, and Tomas Suslov had the first real shot on target of the match just before the half-hour mark when he forced a clever stop from Mike Maignan.
Paulo Fonseca's side had no attacking drive at all in the first half, with an optimistic drive from Filippo Terracciano just before half-time easily knocked over by Lorenzo Montipo as the sides drew level.
That changed after the break as the Rossoneri came forward with a different side, and only some excellent last-ditch defending from Darko Lazovic denied Samuel Chukwueze a potential tap at the far post.
Verona had defended well but were cut open just before the hour mark by a precise pass from Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders fired first-time into the top corner to break the deadlock.
Fonseca responded to the lead with a defensive substitution to shift the momentum towards the hosts, but breaking the stubborn Milan backline proved difficult in the final ten minutes. Ultimately, a succession of errors and stoppages prevented the Mastiffs from applying any consistent pressure as they failed to find a way back into the match.
The three points move AC Milan up to seventh as they move back within five points of the top four, while Verona remain just one spot and one point above the drop zone with the hosts still looking for their first-ever head-to-head clash. win (D2, L8).
