Relief in Miami as Hard Rock Stadium avoids chaos that marred Copa America final

There was a relief on Monday when Boca Juniors and Benfica fans who attended their opening match of the FIFA Club in the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, passed through security gates without incidents.

The Copa America -final of last summer between Argentina and Colombia fell in chaos with thousands of supporters who stormed the stadium after long delays to come in.

Fans climbed stadium gates, scaled walls and crawled through ventilation channels in an attempt to enter the stadium, kicking off delayed for more than an hour.

Many thousands more were trapped outside, with the temperature that rose more than 30 degrees, whereby organizers said that fans “continued to carry illegal behavior – fight police offers, breaking up walls and barricades and destroying the stadium, causing significant damage to the real estate.”

The police made dozens of arrests with organizers who promised a thorough assessment with the location that organizes FIFA World Cup competitions in 2026.

'It's a great environment'

The stadium, the home of NFL's Miami Dolphins, opened the Club World Cup on Saturday and there was a wide -ranging praise with the organization when Fans Argentina first returned to see how Boca Juniors opposite Portugal's Benfica in their opening group C match.

Faria praised Boca Junior supporters who helped create a lively atmosphere in the structure of the competition.

“Everyone has been great so far. I mean, they come to us, Boca Junior fans and take photos with us.

“It's a great environment. (I am) just being happy here.”

In accordance with the friendly rivalry, Argentinian resident of Miami Christian Ferreya arrived with his wife and two young children at the Hard Rock Stadium and said he will support both teams.

“We didn't come to the final (last year), but we live close by, so we know exactly what happened and it was terrible, (but) we don't expect the same thing today,” he said.

“I don't really come from that team (Boca Juniors), we support them as Argentines.

“At the same time, you know, with Benfica is (Angel) Di Maria, a world champion for us, so we both come to see,” he explained.

Di Maria then scored a fine in the first half when Benfica came from two goals to draw 2-2.
