Report denies Newcastle United interest in Atletico Madrid star

Atletico Madrid is set for another very busy summer transfer market, with various deals that have already been completed. Alex Baena and Matteo Ruggeri have become members, and they will not be the last additions made to Diego Simeone's team – but there was also departure, and more could follow to finance extra signing sessions.

Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa have left Athleti to join Real Betis and Tigres, with around € 18 million that has been brought in from those sales. But more may be needed to ensure that Los Colchoneros can make all their desired signing sessions.

And a possible candidate that can be moved is Conor Gallagher. The English midfielder only signed from Chelsea last summer and has difficulty driving a regular starting place in the Athleti-Line-Up. He has had the opportunity to return to the Premier League, and in recent days it has been claimed that Newcastle United is interested in securing his services.

But according to Ben Jacobs, Newcastle is not interested in making a step to sign Gallagher this summer. The Premier League side, which recently completed the signing of Anthony Elanga, has other priorities, so it is unlikely that they will make contact with Atleti with regard to a possible transfer.

Gallagher may have had a mixed debut season with Atleti, but there is no doubt that he is a valuable member of the team of Diego Simeone. It was perhaps a surprise that he was barely used as a central midfielder during the 2024-25 campaign, in which he mainly played on the left as a rotation option with Samuel Lino.

But with the arrival of Baena it is unlikely that Gallagher often plays in that position. As such, it could be used more centrally if he stays with the Riyadhair Metropolitano this summer, which may or may not happen.
