Reus says LA Galaxy’s title defence off to worst possible start

Marco Reus believes that the MLS Cup defense of the LA Galaxy has come the worst possible start, with the champions at the bottom of the Western conference after three straight losses.

The Greg Vanney team started their 2025 campaign with defeats for San Diego FC and the Vancouver WhiteCaps, and things were no better against St. Louis City on Sunday.

Cedric Teuchert and Marcel Hartel scored in a five -minute period on either side of the peace to give the Galaxy a mountain to climb in Dignity Health Sports Park, after which Simon Bechher added some late shine to the Scoreline.

St. Louis had entered MLS for 224 minutes before he arrived in Los Angeles and only had 29.4% of the possession, but they won the expected goals (XG) with 1.98 to 1.82 in a deserved victory.

The Galaxy are the first defensive MLS Cup champions to start the next campaign with three straight losses, and they are also confronted with the prospect of an early Concacaf Champions Cup exit after losing 1-0 of the Herediano of Costa Rica last week.

“I mean, it's the worst start we could have. We have played four games, we have four losses. Have given too many goals. We don't score many goals. Only one,” said Reus.

“We have to find a solution and find the chemistry in our team to build the mentality of winning every game. At the moment, as I said, it is really frustrating.”

The Galaxy Host Herediano in the second stage of that last 16-drawing game on Wednesday, and the former Borussia Dortmund-Man says that their fortunes should hand in that match.

“It's a must-win game. We have to score goals on Wednesday,” the German added.

“We need good energy in the dressing room in the coming days because we play on Wednesday and then on Sunday again. Things have to turn around.”

The next league match of the Galaxy is a visit to the Portland Timbers on Sunday, then they will be gone to Minnesota United the following week.
