Marseille -Baas Roberto de Zerbi has revealed the reason why Mason Greenwood was dropped on the bench in recent competitions.
The 23-year-old striker is still looking for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot after 15 goals in 26 games for the French giants.
After having been a guaranteed starter for a large part of the season, Greenwood has had to deal with performances by the bank for collisions against Lens and Paris Saint-Germain.
Reports in France had suggested that the attacker had been withdrawn because he could go to the exit to the exit from his expectations of the working speed and at the end of the season.
The Zerbi was quickly tackling the problem in his press conference on Friday and claimed that Greenwood is not used to the intense workload he had this season.
“We have to clarify the Mason Greenwood case a bit, because your journalists are always able to change things a little, to make some scoops, because you have to do what all journalists do a bit, what a little chaos is,” said the former boss of Brighton.
'Greenwood is a very good person I love, as I love his father.
'He has had a bit difficult lately because he had a daughter who was born, and I don't think he is used to playing such an intense season and being a main player. I think he has physically paid for it.
'That means that he did not push himself and was not 100 percent the way I wanted in training, in terms of what I expect from a player like him.
'His physical condition has fallen a bit, but my project in Marseille is not only to be eligible for the Champions League, it is also to create something if what Luis Enrique has created (at PSG). He has created a team, a group of strong players, but with a soul. '
After he rose as one of the smartest young talents of Man United, he left the club last summer after he was arrested in January 2022 before being accused of attempted rape, assault and controlling and compulsive behavior.
The charges against Greenwood were withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service after the 'withdrawal of important witnesses and new material that comes to light'.
Greenwood housed his career on loan at the Spanish outfit Getafe last season, where he took 10 goals and six assists.
Since then he has formally applied for his international faith of England, for whom he has made one outing, to Jamaica from Steve McClaren.
