Tottenham has passed an indifferent season because they won a trophy for the first time in 17 years – but finished 17th in the Premier League.
The fate of the club was confirmed on Sunday when they lost 4-1 at home from Brighton on the last day of the competition season and condemned them for the last survival place in the top flight.
They never walked in a serious danger of relegation – ending 13 points above Leicester in the 18th – but the position itself was largely considered a catastrophic failure for the club the size of Tottenham.
Brighton's defeat was the 22nd of the club's competition season, which means that this season they lost around 58 percent of their league games when they concentrated on Europe.
In the meantime, Leicester lost 25, while other relegated silk Ipswich and Southampton lost 24 and 30 respectively.
Spurs '22, however, meant that they broke a Premier League record – most of the competition defeats in a season without being degraded.
It was clear that Spurs and Ange Postecoglou had set all their focus in their Europa League campaign when it became clear that they would have trouble reaching the Champions League through the competition.
Postecoglou often rotated his side in competition matches, with priority to Thursday evening – a decision that presented his rewards.
And the Australian was clear about his opinion about Sunday's season, despite their poor competition.
'How do I rate the season? Excellent, “he said. 'We have won a trophy that we have not done for 17 years and we are in the Champions League.
“Ask a supporter at the start of the season if they would take that and there would be no person in the house who wouldn't.”
The future of the Spurs -Baas remains unclear, with Daniel Levy a decision to make the middle of the poor results, for his part to be with the trophy they have won. Postecoglou was reluctant to discuss his future after the end of the season.
“I will be honest, I think it's strange to talk about my future when we've done something unprecedented,” he said. “I made decisions that I felt to give our best chance to achieve the goal we had to achieve and that has influenced our competition form. If people don't want to take that into account, then there is nothing I can say.
'Some of me think: why is that question asked me? I did something that nobody believed that I could do, and I shouldn't be talking about this here, but you would not ask if there was no doubt, right? '
