Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior is probably at the peak of his career so far, having just won the FIFA Best Award and finished runner-up in the Ballon d'Or – albeit much to his chagrin in the latter case . The Brazilian has cemented his position as the team's star this year, despite the arrival of Kylian Mbappé.
That's all a change from the summer: some had wondered whether Mbappe could overshadow Vinicius, but the opposite has happened. Vinicius has also succeeded in the boardroom. As Relevo revealed, Vinicius decided not to enter into talks over a new contract with Los Blancos this summer, despite receiving a call from the club.
It was a bet on himself that with the Ballon d'Or (which didn't come), the Best Award and another top season under his belt, he would be in a stronger position to negotiate a new contract – until now it seems like a good decision.
His decision to postpone talks last summer also came with Saudi Arabia in the background, and numerous rumors of a possible exit. Vinicius certainly makes it very clear that Real Madrid should not only keep him, but he should be paid like the best in the world. At 24, few players with that much ammunition will sit down for conversations.
