Although it has had a brilliant goal -oriented season so far, speculation continues to exist on the future of Robert Lewandowski as a Barcelona player. The Polish striker, who will be 37 in August, has scored 30 goals in 32 performances in all matches, with his last strike as the winner against Alaves last weekend.
Because of his age, Barcelona started looking at possible successors to Lewandowski, and movements could already be made this summer. However, the person who comes in should compete with the veteran, because it is almost certain that he will continue in Hansi Flick's team until the end of next season.
Earlier it was rumor that the current deal of Lewandowski is increasing this summer, but with a clause that is recorded that activates an automatic extension of one year if a certain number of performances is made during the current campaign. This is not the case, although the actual clause is somewhat similar.
As reported by Sport, Lewandowski's Barcelona contract runs until 2026, which means that he will stay at least one season. However, the club had the option to activate a silver termination for this summer if he played less than 55% of the competitive matches for the Catalan giants during the current campaign.
As it looks now, Lewandowski has reached 50.8%, and only three more performances would catch up with the 55% threshold. As such, Barcelona should ensure that he plays no more than two games if they want the option to shorten this stay by 12 months.
There is no doubt that Lewandowski has been a very good signing for Barcelona since his arrival from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022. If he can continue these goals of the following season and a half, there would be no problems about his continuity. However, since he continues to deteriorate in terms of his overall game, there are ensure that he remains as an undisputed starter.
