Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski brought his critics back after a daring decision after the season not to get to Poland.
The veteran -striker chose to connect with Michal Probierz for the international camp of June after a demanding club season.
Lewandowski called in consultation with Probierz, but the 36-year-old was confronted with some negativity about the decision.
Poland insured a 2-0 friendly victory over Moldova in the absence of Lewandowski-in a competition that he would probably have missed, but he will have a FIFA World Cup qualifying trip from 2026 to Finland on June 10.
As part of an early start of the qualification for next summer's tournament, Poland won two qualifications in March, with Lewandowski won the winner at home on Lithuania.
Lewandowski confirmed that his first call came after he had spoken with medical staff for Poland and Barcelona.
“Due to the circumstances and intensity of the club season, the coach and I have jointly decided that I will not participate in the training camp of the Polish national team in June.”
While he was 37 in August, it was seen as a sensible decision, but there has been some disagreement from Poland and Lewandowski doubled over his position.
“I don't have to explain why I made the decision. Was it the right one? The moment I decided it was. I think the boys will make it without me,” he told TVP Sport, via Marca.
“I called coach Probierz because I wanted to talk to him honestly. I told him that I was not feeling good physically or mentally. I was in a malaise and felt that going to the training camp would not help me to reach the level he wanted.
“I know that I will not have many more opportunities to play in seasons like this, to win the Champions League. Not everyone has to agree with my decision, but there must be respect.”
27 La Liga goals of 34 games were his highest league in three seasons in Barcelona since he was connected in 2022/23.
A big season a total of 42 is also its highest in Catalonia, including 11 scored on route to the defeat of Barcelona in the Semi final of the UEFA Champions League.
