Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to be linked to a summer switch to Real Madrid, but focuses on making. A recovery from an ankle injury
Andy Robertson has admitted that the head of Trent Alexander-Arnold “is not great” … but that it has nothing to do with the intense speculation that he leaves for Real Madrid. The two full-backs in Liverpool are great friends and Robertson admits that it has been difficult to ignore his partner's conversation on the way to the Spanish capital.
But he insists that the irritability of Alexander-Arnold only comes to an ankle injury so that he missed the Merseyside Derby and could keep him from Sunday's trip to Fulham. Robertson said: “Trent's head is not great because he is injured. He hates to be injured, none of us loves to be injured, but it hurts a little more.
“That is all he focused on. It is impossible for me to say that we have not seen all the noise and everyone comments on it, but for us our focus is to become fit and healthy again.
“As soon as he does that, what happens, will happen. Nobody remembers that. People can talk and speculate, but for us we want Trent back very quickly.”
In the absence of Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley, who have been with a hamstring problem, Curtis Jones played on the right back in the win of Merseyside Derby in Liverpool. And Robertson was full of praise for the versatile Jones.
He said: “I thought Curtis was excellent. Curtis was excellent. He is such an intelligent football player. We recently joked … he played left wing, number ten, number six, number eight, striker, like a right back. Hopefully he can't play back!
“But it shows how intelligent he is. He took the game in his pass, was so comfortable on the ball and he also defended very well.”
Prior to the matches of this weekend, Liverpool has a gap between 12 points at the top of the Premier League and after the exit of the Champions League and the last defeat of the Carabao Cup, Robertson admits that it was a relief to return to the successful Premier League-Groove. He said: “It was good to be back to winning manners and we will go again on Sunday, which will be a really difficult game.
“You talk about the 12 points, but we are talking about the next three points. Each game gets bigger for us. Every time we win three points, the gap gets bigger for us.
“We have eight games left, every time we pick up three points, it brings us closer to where we want to be. But we are still far away.”
The last time Liverpool won the title, they had to celebrate in an empty stadium in the 2019-2020 season because of Covid. But Robertson insists that their thoughts have not been driven to a party in a full -house by Anfield.
He said: “Nobody here allows us to believe or think. We have to concentrate on the next game. I can guarantee that there are 60,000 thinking in Anfield. And that is suitable for them. They can drag along, we let them throw away and we take a lot of pleasure.
“But we have to stay focused. We are the players, we have a task to do. Keep pushing and keep winning games to get over the line. If the time comes, we will certainly enjoy it, but we don't think so far ahead.”
