There is no shortage of people willing to tell Rodri Hernandez that he actually didn't deserve the Ballon d'Or, and that Vinicius Junior did – especially in Madrid. In the past week, Cristiano Ronaldo has added himself to that list, but Rodri has explained the hole in their arguments.
The Portuguese attended the Globe Soccer Awards last week and said he would have awarded it to Vinicius, while Real Madrid also refrained from attending the ceremony after learning the Manchester City midfielder was likely to win. In an interview with Diario AS, Rodri pointed out that Ronaldo's opinion was hypocritical, as was Real Madrid president Florentino Perez's suggestion that journalists from some countries should not be allowed to vote.
“Good, [it’s] actually a surprise, because he knows better than anyone how this prize works and especially how the winner is chosen. This year, the journalists who voted thought I should win the election. It was probably the same journalists who voted for him to win at some point, and I imagine he would agree [with the voting system].”
Rodri also said that he expects to be back from his cruciate ligament injury before the end of the season. While he didn't want to put a date on it, he did note that he would like to be back before the Club World Cup in the US next year. Spain could also be involved in the Nations League final if they win the quarter-final against the Netherlands in March.
