Roma’s Hummels to retire at end of season

Germany and Roma Center-Back Mats Hummels will retire at the end of the season, which brings the curtain to an almost two decades of career.

A product from the Bayern Munich Academy, 2014 World Cup winner Hummels made a switch to arch -rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2008.

After he had a second spell at both clubs, he joined Roma last year and made 18 performances for the Serie A club.

Closed 78 times for Germany, Hum Hummels raised the World Cup in Brazil. The 36-year-old has won five Bundesliga titles, as well as three German cups and six German super cups.

He came close to winning the Champions League twice with Dortmund when they finished second place in the 2012-13 and 2023-24 seasons.

“I am struggling with my emotions right now. Now comes when no football player can avoid. After more than 18 years and so many things that football has given me, I end my career this summer,” said Hummels, who last played for Germany on social media in November 2023.

“I know how much this entire journey, this whole path has meant for me. How extraordinary it was to experience that.

“Because it costs a lot, just having the right coaches at the right time, being fit at the right time, have the right teammates at the right time. And I have seen so many guys, so many coaches, to which I owe a lot.”

Hummels, whose contract with Roma ends in the narrow season, has made 18 performances for the Italian club in all competitions this season.
