Rooney is blamed for Plymouth’s likely relegation from the Championship

Wayne Rooney may have left the ManagementHotSeat perhaps four months ago, but that did not protect the former captain of England against the continuous fall -out of his disastrous enchanting as Plymouth Boss.

The 39-year-old supervised only four competition profits and suffered 13 defeats in 23 champion matches after the leadership of the pilgrims last May.

With two more games – the journey from Saturday to Preston and the visit of 3 May of Leeds – Plymouth remains rooted to the bottom of the champion table, three points of safety.

Miron Muslic was accused of driving away from relegation to League One when he took over from Rooney who was fired on New Year's Eve.

And the Austrian born in Bosnia, who has since picked up 23 points of his 19 games, has focused his finger on his predecessor and insisted that the safety of the club would have been insured if he had been appropriate from the start of the season.

“I think if I am the head coach from the first day, we will be far away, far away from the relegation zone,” he said.

'We would be safe five games ago. I really believe that if I will be here with my staff here from the first day, we will not be nearby where we are now. '

A series of four wins and one draw of their last eight games, including Monday's 3-1 victory over Coventry, has given Plymouth an external chance to stay up, but they probably have to win both their remaining games.

Even if they do that, survival is from Argyle's hands – they need Luton Town, Cardiff City and Derby County to stay on all drop points when they stay up.

But Muslic insists that he has not given up hope and says that recent results show that there is still a chance that Plymouth can protect a third consecutive season in the second layer.

“The performance today, the performance at Middlesbrough,” he told BBC Sport after the victory over Coventry.

'We have taken nine points in Home Park against Norwich, against Sheffield United, against Coventry.

“These are teams that play for the Premier League and they all lost here in Plymouth in Home Park, which gives me confidence.”
