Rooney predicts Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid twist – ‘Wouldn’t surprise me’

Legend Wayne Roonne of Manchester United believes that Trent Alexander-Arnold could still decide to stay in Liverpool in the midst of speculation.

Wayne Rooney says that he would 'not be surprised' to see how Trent Alexander-Arnold changes ideas about a proposed transfer to Real Madrid, despite speculation that Liverpool's right-back to the Spanish capital has already been agreed at the end of the season.

The English star, 26, has been strongly associated with a move to Spain for months after he had demolished his contract and, after he was free since January to speak with foreign clubs, it is now assumed that a deal for Alexander-Arnold Anfield for the Bernabeu in the summer transfer window is just done.

The news is not doing well with the majority of Liverpool fans, especially since Alexander-Arnold and his teammates are about to win the Premier League title.

But Rooney, referring to his own experiences, says that a lot can change before a contract is officially signed – and that Alexander -Arnold could still choose to stay with the Reds.

The Legend of Manchester United wrote in his BBC Sport-Column: “Alexander-Arnold has been an excellent servant of the club, so you can't mislead him who wants to try something new. It wouldn't just be a shame for Liverpool fans if he left because you want to see the best players in the Premier League, I wish him well.

“Yet, as I discovered myself, just because there are conversations about a transfer, it does not mean that it will happen. It is known that some United fans protested outside my house when they thought I would leave in 2010, but then I had agreed my new contract.

“Alexander -Arnold has not signed anything with Real yet and it would not surprise me if, even after all this speculation, he remains in Anfield. Much can happen before a contract is signed – as I know from experience.”

Many theories have emerged since the news that broke out that an agreement between Alexander-Arnold and Real was almost done. But Rooney thinks the chance to find out a new challenge abroad with Real Madrid is the most important attraction for Alexander-Arnold instead of trophies.

“He has been in Liverpool for almost 20 years since he was six – but the reality is that most players move at one point – that's why there are so few men from one club such as Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher,” said Rooney after pointing out that Alexander -Barnold has already won 'Everything has won everything' with his boyhood club.

“I would not blame Alexander -Arnold because I want to do something a little differently – such as a new challenge in a new country – Spain would be a really good move for him.”
