Ruben Amorim already ‘REGRETS’ taking the Man United job, claims Paul Merson

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has claimed that Ruben Amorim regrets taking over the Manchester United job in mid-season.

Amorim has won just three of his 11 Premier League games in charge of the Red Devils since taking up the job in November, picking up 11 points.

Erik Ten Hag had recorded 15 points in 11 games before he was fired and after a radical change in the system, Amorim's ideas don't seem to be sticking.

The Portuguese recently revealed that he had only had six proper training sessions with his stars.

He was so furious with his players after the 3-1 loss to Brighton that he called them 'arguably the worst team in the club's history' and reportedly broke the dressing room TV.

And Merson says Amorim is questioning whether he should have taken the Old Trafford role after United's poor start to the campaign.

'This man is 39 years old. I mean, there are players who are just finishing their football careers at the age of 38,” Merson said on Sky Sports' Football on Saturday.

'He is young and in management, very young. He has done well in Portugal, he comes to one of the biggest clubs in the world, not the best team in the world by far, but one of the biggest clubs in the world.

'And he finds it difficult. The pressure is on him. Someone has obviously said to him, you have to go back and blame yourself a little bit here because the players won't have that, they won't have that, they won't sit there saying that, but it will be difficult for him.

“I don't see where this turns out. With the Tottenham One, I can see the players when they come back, I think, “Oh yeah, they'll cause problems for teams on their day,” especially the way they play.

“I think deep down the manager will be thinking, 'Should I have taken this job?' ' He didn't want to take it until the end of the season and I guess I think he'll be sitting there thinking about it now. “I'm not sure I can do this job.”

'I don't think it's just him. I think any manager, I think you look at financial fair play rules and how far behind they are now, and look at where they are in their league, they're 13th in the league. Bournemouth have better players. I mean, when has that ever happened? '

Amorim has come under increasing scrutiny and even admitted last month that he could be sacked by Manchester United.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth discovered the brutality of this regime when he was sacked in December just 159 days after joining the club in a lucrative move from Newcastle.

Last weekend Amorim claimed his team could be the worst in United's history, but after a strong backlash he has since backtracked on that assessment.

“I spoke more for myself than for my players,” he said. 'If you look around, every time I speak – and I speak a lot – you push around the players are not good enough. I never put the spot on my players.

'Because it's the same players who are doing worse with a new coach, that's my only concern at the moment. I'm not taking anything from the players, what I'm saying is that we need to improve in the details. '

United will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to Fulham on Sunday evening.
