Ruben Amorim delivers promising update on Lisandro Martinez
Manchester United have been given an injury boost ahead of Ruben Amorim's first game at Old Trafford, with Lisandro Martinez set to return after missing Sunday's draw against Ipswich.
The Portuguese manager took top spot at United at the start of the international break after an emotional farewell at Sporting Lisbon, where he won two titles.
His first game got off to a dream start, with Marcus Rashford scoring in the second minute, but Ipswich came back into the game to secure a deserved 1-1 draw at Portman Road.
Now Amorim's attention turns to his goal at Old Trafford on Thursday night against Bodo/Glimt, with United currently stranded in the middle of the Europa League with six points from four games.
And the new boss arrived at today's pre-match press conference with positive injury news, with two key defenders having returned to training as the crisis at the back eases.
The 39-year-old revealed that both Martinez and England centre-back Harry Maguire were among the first-team squad on Wednesday.
When asked if they would be fit to play in the Europa League, Amorim said: 'Not Harry, Licha [Lisandro Martinez] is ready. He hasn't stood still for too long, so I think he's ready. The situation is different from Harry's.'
The news comes well-timed after the boss went into his opening game with very limited options at the back as Maguire, Martinez, Leny Yoro, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw were all injured.
Martinez has been a regular for United this season, but Maguire has been absent since October due to a muscle problem that occurred in the draw against Aston Villa.
Amorim swears by a 3-4-3 system that requires three centre-backs and will welcome the return of the pair in the coming weeks, and can also look forward to Yoro's long-awaited comeback.
“He's training,” he said. 'We believe a lot in him and are preparing for the best way to start with Leny.'
The French centre-back, who joined from Lille for £52.2million this summer, has been injured since early August after breaking his foot in a pre-season friendly against Arsenal.
Yoro was not part of the main group at training on Wednesday, but Shaw and Malacia were present, as were midfielders Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo.
Lindelof suffered a groin injury in Sweden's match against Slovakia earlier this month.
Amorim will look to introduce himself to the Old Trafford faithful with his first win as United manager and a clash against unknown Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt provides the perfect opportunity to do so.
He took over from embattled boss Erik ten Hag after United's 2-1 defeat at West Ham proved to be one too many for the Dutchman.
United acted quickly to secure the services of Sporting boss Amorim but could not avoid a notice period that kept the manager in Portugal for a further three games.
He was given a three-year contract, brought in his own backroom staff and opted not to retain interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.
