Ruben Amorim green lights first transfer since becoming Man Utd boss

Ruben Amorim has approved his first signing as Manchester United boss as he tries to solve a problem position for the Red Devils.

The Portuguese took over from former boss Erik ten Hag in November. But he has had a stuttering start at Old Trafford so far.

Amorim led the Red Devils to three wins, two defeats and a draw in all competitions. United is therefore thirteenth in the Premier League ahead of Sunday's Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could opt to invest in the squad during the January transfer window in a bid to improve the club's fortunes and Amorim has already given his approval to one signing. According to Estadio Deportivo, Sporting Lisbon's former head coach has approved a transfer for Girona defender Miguel Gutierrez.

The Spaniard is reportedly available for €35 million due to a release clause. However, a deal could potentially have some hurdles, with Real Madrid also said to be interested, while United would have to enter into discussions with the owners of Manchester City, who own a 47 percent stake in the Spanish club.

Gutierrez would certainly solve a problem position for United, who are keen to sign a new left-back in the near future. The injury problems of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have seen club chiefs add a left-back to their shopping list.

Gutierrez, 23, joined Girona from Real Madrid in 2022 and has become a key player for the Spanish side. He made just under 100 appearances for Girona and helped them to a Champions League place last season.

Elsewhere, Cerro Porteno youngster Diego Leon has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, while United are currently in talks over a bargain. A transfer would become official once he turns 18, but sporting manager Gabriel Wainer has warned a deal has not yet been completed.

He said: “Manchester United have a clear intention to sign Diego Leon. But the paperwork is not completed yet.”

He added: “Other teams have also asked for Leon in recent hours, but the one who showed a statement of intent, without going into details, was Manchester United.”

Away from the forwards, United have also made some brutal decisions regarding their current squad. It has been reported that only six players are considered 'unsaleable', including Marcus Rashford who the club are said to be willing to cash in next month.
