Ruben Amorim hauls off Joshua Zirkzee after 33 minutes to huge cheers as Man Utd as Neville says ‘that is brutal’

RUBEN AMORIM took Joshua Zirkzee off after just 33 MINUTES against Newcastle.

And the Dutch forward received sarcastic cheers from Manchester United fans when he was substituted, with commentator Gary Neville leaving to feel sorry for him.

The Red Devils flopped to 2-0 within twenty minutes at Old Trafford after goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton.

Man Utd boss Amorim played Zirkzee as a second striker, behind Rasmus Hojlund.

But before halftime he had seen enough when he decided to exchange him for Kobbie Mainoo.

Zirkzee immediately bolted down the tunnel, before emerging a few minutes later to sit on the bench.

And Man Utd legend Gary Neville was sympathetic to the £36.5million summer signing.

He said: “I actually feel sorry for him, I really do.

“I know he makes a lot of money but there is a human being in there who is actually being cheered on by his home fans and that is cruel.

“We haven't seen that very often at Old Trafford. I've been coming here for 43 years.”

But Neville was undeterred when assessing Man Utd's first-half performance as a team.

He said: “You are looking at the worst pound-for-pound team in the country, bar none.”

Zirkzee has made 26 appearances for Man Utd this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists.

But the ex-Bologna striker was criticized by Neville, along with Man Utd's other summer signings, ahead of the Newcastle clash.

Neville said: “What I'm surprised about is that when Manchester United signed these three or four players in the summer, I didn't hear anyone say, 'Manchester United have had a terrible transfer market.'

“I'm shocked at how poor those players have been in their first months.

“I've said it before that this club has been a graveyard for players with a good reputation. And it's happening again.”

“I didn't hear anyone say in the summer, when Yoro, De Ligt, Ugarte and Zirkzee arrived, that United had not signed half-decent players.

“The problem is that when you see them here in a red shirt, Manchester United look like a worse team. That's the strange thing.”
