Ruben Amorim makes worrying Champions League admission after Brentford defeat

Manchester United has shown a contrasting form this season in the Premier League and Europe and Ruben Amorim has admitted that his team is not yet ready to perform on two fronts

Ruben Amorim has warned that his team is not ready to be competitive in the Premier League and to take on the responsibilities of Champions League. Manchester United fell on their 16th League defeat against Brentford on Sunday, despite the close qualification for the European top match.

The Red Devils lost 4-3 of the bees in West London after they took the lead by Mason Mount. The own goal of Luke Shaw, Kevin Schade Brace and Yoane Wissa effort handed Thomas Frank's silk a healthy lead before late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo the score limited.

Amorim's side is 15th in the division, but are about to have a place in the Europa League final after a victory over athletic Bilbao. Winning the competition would secure a place in the Champions League.

But United's Portuguese boss has some reservations with the ability to fight with the schedule. Amorim turned his way against Brentford to give priority to the European ambitions of the club.

“I have no doubt that we play better. So we have to take all the heat,” he said. “We are currently losing competitions in the Premier League. We are fighting for the Europa League and Thursday is the most important competition for us.”

“We are not ready to play Premier League competitive and to be in the Champions League,” he added. “But we have to win and we have to win this competition to give our fans something.

“Then we will have time to prepare the team to deal with those two competitions.”

Amorim was forced to replace Matthijs de Ligt against the bees, because the first start of the Dutchman was short -lived after injury. The ex-Bayern Munich defender was replaced for 45 minutes in the opening.

And the United Boss is worried about the state of De Ligt while he continues to manage his team. Amorim is worried about the impact that the injury could have on next season.

“I don't know, so I'm really worried – not about Thursday,” said Amorim. “We left Luke Shaw during the break to protect on Thursday and have players, but I am more worried if it is a small or large injury and think about next season.”
