Ruben Amorim: Man Utd are in a rush to improve and challenge for EPL titles

Head coach of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, says that he is “in a hurry” for his team to improve and challenge again for Premier League titles.

The Portuguese were questioned on the subject prior to ruling competition champions Manchester City in the Manchester Derby of Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Media reports in February said that the club's hierarchy had unveiled a plan with the name 'Mission 21', which is aimed at helping the club to win their 21st league title by 2028.

But Amorim hopes for success before that time and hopes to see clear improvements by next season, which starts in just over four months.

He told a press conference before the competition: “I understand it, but I am not naive. I don't want to think we need many years to be competitive. I can't think so, I can't manage that, it's not in me. That's why I am busy on myself.

“I know that we will not be the biggest challengers in the coming year or two years. We will change many things in the club and we know it will take a lot of time, but I will not say that I need many years.

“Next year is our goal. I am not saying that we will win the title the following year, I am not crazy.

“I say that I don't want this conversation to need for many years and let's keep it calm – no, we are in a hurry. We have a lot of suffering for next year to be so much better.

“I don't want to be the man who is sitting here and says we need a lot of time. I will not be that coach.

“All teams, they are already in a place where we need a lot to catch them and they will improve again next season. I want to concentrate on our strengths and use our club to try to get one or two major players.

“I can't endure it in three years, we are still trying something. We will start for me next season. We have to be so much better because this is a huge club and I want to put that pressure on me and everyone here.”

Amorim: I am more focused on man utd problems – not those of man city

It will be the first home Manchester Derby for Amorim on Sunday, but he has already surpassed the Pep Guardiola team this season.

Man Utd was 2-1 winners in the Premier League meeting of December thanks to a late Amad Diallo target. It came in the middle of a bad form for Man City in which they only won one competition in 13 trips in all competitions.

When asked if he felt that Man City had recovered since then, Amorim replied: “I am more focused on our problems. We have bigger problems than Man City.

“They had that run at the time, but they improved. They can play in different ways and it is hard to understand and think how they will face us.

“They may have the best coach in the world, they have top players, so it will be a difficult match. But I am so focused on improving our team, I am not aimed at the improvements of Man City.”

Amorim became the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson who won his first Manchester Derby, but said it was not his best moment in the club so far.

He added: “I don't know, it's hard [say]. Sometimes I am really happy with the little things, not with the big things.

“Here and at other clubs I see no victory as a special moment. A special moment is to be really competitive to win titles. Even in the third division you can win against the best team in the country.”
