Ruben Amorim says his Man Utd side ‘are being the worst team in history’ of club after 3-1 defeat by Brighton

Ruben Amorim has described his Man Utd side as “the worst team perhaps in the history of Manchester United”.

Brighton recorded a 3-1 win at Old Trafford on Sunday, leaving United stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League as Amorim's torrid start to his tenure at the club continued.

“In ten games in the Premier League we have won two,” Amorim said.

“Imagine what this is for a Manchester United fan. Imagine what this is for me. So we are getting a new coach who loses more than the previous coach. I am fully aware of that.”

“Like I said, I'm not going to change no matter what. I know we can succeed, but we have to survive this moment. Because I'm not naive and I know we have to survive now.

“We may be the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know you want the headlines, but I say that because we need to recognize that and change that. Please, your headlines.”

United are currently thirteenth in the Premier League. Bruno Fernandes' penalty was United's only shot on target during the defeat to Brighton.

“I don't really understand it at the moment,” said the United captain. “We talk all the time about how difficult it is to play at Old Trafford. How can Man Utd struggle to play on their own ground with the atmosphere we have, with the great stadium and all that?”

Is this the worst Man Utd team in history?

Amorim described his Man Utd side as “the worst team perhaps in the history of Manchester United”, so does the Portuguese have a point? This is what the statistics say:

'The players and fans will suffer, but it will bring results'

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Amorim stressed his intention not to change his playing style at Manchester United despite concerns over his 3-4-3 formation.

But when asked if things will continue like this for a while until the Portuguese can put his stamp on his team, Amorim said: “That's clear. With me it's clear. Because I'm not going to change the path.” I see the game. I am very clear about that.

“The players will suffer, I'm sorry, the fans will suffer. I have one way of doing things, I know it will happen.” [bring] results. But we have to endure these moments. I think it is very clear to everyone what we are going to do.”

Asked whether we accept whether such results will continue, United captain Fernandes said: “That cannot be true. I understand the outside perspective. But we cannot be comfortable thinking this is OK. Because it isn't.”

“I'm not here to lose games and be in the position we're in at the moment. But I know no one in the locker room is, and if anyone is, he or she can't be here.”

How bad were United against Brighton?

Sky Sports' Adam Bate at Old Trafford: 'Desperately poor from United again. They saved it in the second half against Southampton, this time Brighton rightly denied them the match. Amorim warned it would be a rollercoaster. This was another dip.”

Jamie O'Hara on Sky Sports News: “Big, big problems for Man Utd. I'm not sure about Amorim with the 3-4-3. They were miles off. It was a really poor performance. They offered nothing.”

Sky Sports' Sam Blitz: “Before the game, Ruben Amorim complained that opponents were finding it too easy against his team at Old Trafford – and then watched his side completely surrender to Brighton. Remember, this was a Seagulls side who had played eight league games played without a goal.” had won before this week. What would the score have been if United had played a form team?”
