Ruben Amorim ‘wants to sell 50% of Man Utd squad’ as players told they’re not good enough

After Manchester United had suffered a defeat from the Premier League, Rio Ferdinand expressed his conviction that Ruben Amorim will want to give up a huge part of his underperforming team

The legend Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United believes that Ruben Amorim wants to reject at least “50%” of the current Red Devil team. Amorim, 40, saw his United Side losing their 17th Premier League match of the campaign on Sunday when fellow plasterers West Ham United won 2-0 at Old Trafford.

While United has shined in Europe, he had reached the final of the Europa League by overcoming Athletic Bilbao with 7-1 in the semi-final-wash their domestic form terrible. Amorim admitted that he was “ashamed” because of the performance and the result of the West Ham that United left in 16th position.

Ferdinand admitted that it may require several transfer windows for Amorim to build the team in his vision. He also believes that the former sports CP head coach can clean up no less than 50% of the United Camp to finance and make room for new recruits.

The ex-sizing defender said on his Rio podcast: “I think he looks around the dressing room and thinks:” If I could wave a magic wand, at least 50% of this team would not be here in the next five years. “

“They are not good enough and they are not right for the way he wants to play. I look at him and think that, at least, he needs two good windows to get rid of those he does not need, but also get players he really needs.”

Ferdinand added: “There must be a lot of things to go well for us to make a dramatic turn here. He coaches the team to understand what he wants, which has led to terrible results in the Premier League consistently achieving.

“He has to recruit dynamic athletes. I don't want Mavericks, or players who are frilly and can do pirouettes. No, no, people who can also run past and about people.”

Amorim has already hinted that there is a plan with regard to the coming summer transfer window. The Portuguese boss said: “I talk to the board, with everyone and even with the fans at every moments.

“I have a clear feeling that I know what this team should be so much better, and that helped me to maintain that level of not so much and not so high in some times.”

The only hope of United on a sort of salvation is in the Europa League, where they are confronted with the 17th placed Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao. The victory in the final next Wednesday would qualify the Red Devils for a place in the Champions League next season.

However, that was at the back of Amorim's thoughts in Old Trafford when he spoke to the media in his press conference after the game. He said, “How should a Manchester United manager feel in that position? Displayed.”

Amorim added: “Everyone is focused on the final. The final is not the biggest thing in our football club. We have to change many things. If we do not change the way we play and implement and feel this urgency to win every game, we should not play in the Champions League.

“We just have to stay in the Premier League and learn how we can be competitive one week at a time. The biggest focus on our football club is to change many things. It's not just the final.”
