Ruben Amorim has gambled his future of Manchester United by allowing Marcus Rashford this month to join Aston Villa,
That is the opinion of Premier League icon Paul Merson, who thinks Rashford is flourishing in the midlands in the last drop for old Trafford bosses. The graduate of the United Academy completed his move to Villa on Sunday evening, because he was considered excess by Amorim for requirements.
Rashford will join the Unai Emery side for the rest of the season, with an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer. It is a turbulent time between Rashford and Amorim to close – at least temporarily – a turbulent time.
The international of England confirmed that he was looking for a new challenge in December, after he had been omitted from the MatchDay team to be confronted with Manchester City. Amorim remained leaving him from squadrons and went so far to say that he would rather play 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital.
But Merson has suggested that if his move to Villa goes well, while United continues to struggle, Amorim could pay the price. “The manager currently has no more ideas. He is struggling badly,” said the ex-Arsenal star on Sky Sports News.
“What he has done with the Rashford situation is amazing. Ghosts. His task is at the game at this pace. If Rashford gets ten goals in ten matches and man United, continues with the way they play, then the then the Board will ask the question: what are you doing?
The Red Devils seem as if they are on the last day of the January window, despite the defeat against Crystal Palace that lags them in the bottom half. United has only made one senior signing this month, with Patrick Dorgu from the left -wing back of Lecce.
But in attacking areas, United seems to stay with what they have, despite Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund's struggles. Merson added: “Man United should get Mateta, that's what they need. He is a strong boy at the front, plays at the top of his game, he leads the line, scores goals now. He runs and works his socks Harder than anyone know.
“But they won't because he plays for Palace. And everyone would go: what do you buy it for? But he is 100 times better than someone who has United in the front line. Not Amad, he is a young child – but he is much better than Hojlund and Zirkzee at the moment.
“And Man United plays Mainoo in front. If you are one of those two center fire, I would say: I might as well go on loan and play for Exeter this month. “
As far as Rashford is concerned, he joins Villa while they are fighting for another top-four finish, as well as participation in the last stages of the Champions League this season.
“I think it's clear. We are clearly still in the Champions League, we want to go as far as possible as we can. If you don't want to win, you will never win. That will be my main goal and continue to push the competition to become as high as possible, “he said Villatv.
