Salah claims he is ‘far away’ from signing new Liverpool deal

Mohamed Salah is “a long way” from signing a new contract with Liverpool despite leading the way towards a second Premier League title.

The 32-year-old attacker is out of contract at the end of this season and can negotiate a move to a non-English club from January 1.

Salah scored his 20th goal of a stellar season as the Reds beat West Ham 5-0 on Sunday, but revealed afterwards he is not close to agreeing new terms with the club.

He told Sky Sports: “We are still a long way from that.

“All I think about is that I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of that.

“I will do my best to make sure the team wins the trophy. There are a few other teams that are overtaking us and we have to stay focused and humble and go again.”

Sunday's win marked the eighth time Salah has both scored and assisted in a Premier League match, already the most any player has done in a single season.

He has registered 30 goals (17 goals and 13 assists) and is on course to equal Harry Kane by scoring more than 20 goals in nine Premier League campaigns.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who scored against West Ham, and Virgil van Dijk are also out of contract this summer, with reports from Spain this weekend claiming Real Madrid are confident of convincing the former to leave his boyhood club for LaLiga .

But Liverpool boss Arne Slot insists he is not worried three star players could leave the club before next season.

He said: “I have control over them to a certain extent, based on what I expect from them on the pitch, and I'm very happy to see what Virgil brings, what Trent brings and what Mo brings.

“As far as their private lives are concerned, I have no control over them.”

Liverpool are eight points clear of Nottingham Forest at the top of the Premier League, while Arsenal and Chelsea still have to play this week and are in action against Manchester United on Sunday.
