Salah makes new claim on future as Liverpool lead race for French star

Liverpool are one step closer to the first trophy of the season and manager Arne Slot may need more reinforcements to help his side compete on multiple fronts.

The Reds beat Southampton 2-1 in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday and also sit top of the Premier League and Champions League table as they enter the new year.

Slot made just one senior signing in the summer when Federico Chiesa arrived from Juventus for around £12.5million, but the Italian has barely featured due to fitness issues and the Dutchman will now be keen to secure a few signings as they aim for the title can offer.

Here, Mirror Football takes a look at Liverpool's latest transfer stories and the latest gossip around Anfield.

Mo Salah once again speaks out about the future

Mohamed Salah's future has been a hot topic this season. The Egyptian's contract expires next summer and the player has yet to officially sign a new contract.

Mirror Football reported at the start of this month that Salah was close to agreeing a new two-year contract, but Liverpool fans are still waiting for an official announcement on his new terms.

Despite lingering doubts over his future, the forward continues to make some excellent changes as Liverpool can boost their title hopes after four goals and three assists in his last four games.

Now a new clip of Salah speaking about his future – posted on December 8 – has emerged on social media.

In the video, the 32-year-old is asked for clarity on his future at Liverpool during a Zoom call, but instead reiterated his uncertainty over whether he would stay.

“I don't know yet,” he said. “My contract expires at the end of this year, so I don't know yet what will happen. I will look at my options, but I haven't made a decision yet.”

Hamann identifies Kerkez as Robertson's replacement

Andy Robertson has been an incredible pillar for Liverpool over the past eight years, but the Scotland international has faced occasional criticism this season after a handful of mistakes.

He was guilty of one major mistake in a 2-2 draw against Fulham last week, which also saw him sent off and there are suggestions that Liverpool may soon have to look for a long-term replacement for Robertson after he turns 30 has become.

Former Reds star Dietmar Hamann believes Robertson's successor could be right under Liverpool's noses as he introduced Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez following his excellent start to the season with the Cherries.

Milos Kerkez is a brilliant player. We see it time and time again in the Premier League. If you play well you will attract a lot of interest,” Hamann told Boyle Sports. “Andy Robertson is in his late 20s and Kostas Tsimikas is a great back-up but he has wanted to leave for two seasons. It's a position Liverpool should definitely look at.

“Robertson is a great player who is in a slump at the moment. If there is a player at the level of Kerkez or Alphonso Davies, why not go for it. Milos Kerkez reminds me a lot of John Arne Riise.”

“Riise liked to bomb forward and was a very attacking left back. He had a great attack on him. It's a bonus when you have a full-back who defends really well and can score goals and cross a few balls .” It makes the game a lot easier.”

Liverpool 'leading race to sign Cherki'

Lyon winger Rayan Cherki was once one of football's brightest talents and he is now fulfilling that potential after a brilliant campaign in Ligue 1.

The France Under-21 international scored five goals and seven assists from just seven starts midway through the season, including a fantastic recent run in which he registered four assists and two goals in just three games.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Liverpool are now ready to make a move for the 21-year-old as they look to the future and there have been suggestions that Lyon could let him leave in January due to financial problems.

Cherki is worth around £24million, although Liverpool may have to scrap terms with Lyon's Ligue 1 rivals PSG if they want to secure his signature, with the French giants previously “at the front of the queue”.

Liverpool are already blessed with a number of wingers at the club, including Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Chiesa. However, Slot will be keen to bring more young talent into his attack, especially if Salah eventually leaves.
