Legend Paul Scholes van Manchester United has admitted that he understands why Bruno Fernandes was punished for handball by VAR in the incident that led to the controversial fine of Real Sociedad in their draw against the Red Devils.
United was denied a victory over the first legs for a difficult night in the Reale Arena after Mikel Oyarzabal had canceled the opener of Joshua Zirkzee.
The hosts were given the opportunity to deliver the procedure, 20 minutes from time when Var Official Pol van Boekel saw that Fernandes had treated the ball with his left arm in the penalty area.
Slovak referee Ivan Kruzliak was then advised to go to the Pitch-Side Monitor to take a look at the incident before pointing to the place.
Captain Oyarzabal then went to the place and made no mistake, and sent Andre Onana the wrong way after a spell of serious United pressure.
The penalty incident had caused a commotion among United fans on social media and former United -Midfielder has described the entire debacle as 'strange'.
“I didn't know why the game had stopped, I think it's handball,” Scholed told TNT Sports. “It is not a position where you expect Fernandes, sometimes when you put your hand up, you are afraid to get a bang in the head.”
Fernandes' infiction remained unnoticed by Kruzliak and apparently the Sociedad players, with very few of those who are attractive for a penalty.
However, Van Boekel was quick to advise the referee to view the incident, to the surprise of many in the stadium, including Scholes.
“I really didn't see anything then, but looking back it is a penalty,” the 50-year-old continued. “I don't think someone of us has seen it. I wondered why they stopped the game, but they went back to it and it was a penalty.
'A bit surprised that Bruno [Fernandes] Is in that position, he doesn't seem like someone who is dominant to lead the ball and he pulls out. I would be the same in that situation and you can understand why they gave it. '
United checked the procedure before Sociedad got a route back in the game, and even the draw.
Zirkzee gave them the lead with a low ride in the middle of the net after some brilliant work by Alejandro Garnacho along the left to have the chance.
It was only the second goal of the Dutchman in 17 games – and after he had missed the last penalty in the FA Cup of United's Fa Cup fifth round, but it gave United the impulse to continue.
Garnacho continued to cause problems for the Sociedad-Lijlijn and came close when he hit the side only six minutes after the opener.
Nevertheless, the hosts would be the same and started the opportunities of United as the momentum switched. Fortunately for the visitors, they would hold for a valuable draw.
“Until the punishment we had control and the changed momentum,” United Baas Ruben Amorim told TNT Sports. 'We were really tired in the last 30 minutes and at Old Trafford it will be different, the pressure will be on us.
“The momentum changed but it was clearly fatigue. We were late on the balls and they were stronger in the last 30 minutes.
“We had good possession until the punishment. We can put the ball behind us, our decisions are sometimes not the best, but we have good moments. '
