Paul Scholes admits he would be 'insulted' if Manchester United sold Kobbie Mainoo as they consider offloading some of their homegrown talent.
Bosses at Old Trafford have opened up the entire squad to offers as they look to hold the line financially and will listen to bids for their prized assets. Selling homegrown players is the most favorable when it comes to PSR, and that includes players like Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
Mainoo has only been in the first team for just over twelve months but has become one of their leading players and is among the best academy graduates the club has produced in years.
Chelsea are among those interested in the midfielder, who is still involved in contract negotiations with the club, with United not ruling out the sale of one of their leading players. Garnacho could also continue with Napoli's enthusiasm this month and Scholes would be furious if the Manchester side let go of one of their own.
He told TNT Sports: “It would be absolutely ridiculous if the club had to sell him. All the hard work the club has had to do, he's been here for seven, eight years, Mainoo, and then you have to sell him. ” him because of the PSR rules? It's ridiculous. He is United's brightest spark, the leading man who could be here for the next five to 10 years.
On Garnacho, he added: “I see it with Garnacho. I think United can be better than Garnacho. Although he is a young player and can get better, he is a bit shabby and his decision-making is sometimes very poor. Garnacho , I wouldn't be afraid or worried if they were sold, Mainoo, I would be offended by that.”
Garnacho was recently dropped by Ruben Amorim before returning to the first-team picture. Napoli want to bring him to Italy this month as they look for a replacement for PSG-bound Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Amorim has minimal resources to work with as United look to avoid the wrath of PSR penalties, having also invested heavily in the summer. Although the new manager wants to keep Mainoo at the club, he recently made no guarantees about his future.
He said: “Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players we are building for this club, but we know the position the club is in at the moment. We will see.”
Amorim also added: “I really love my players. I want to keep them, especially the talented ones. It is a difficult moment and I am very happy with Kobbie. He is improving.”
