Scholes thinks Spurs are ‘favourites’ to win UEL but reveals why he’s backing MU

Paul Scholes believes that Tottenham Hotspur will be considered the favorites who go to the Europa League final, but still expects Manchester United to be at the top.

Spurs have defeated three times this season, including a 3-0 win in Old Trafford in September, a 1-0 home victory in February and a dramatic 4-3 triumph in the Carabao Cup in between.

In fact, United has not defeated any traces in one of their last six meetings, but Scholes is on European experience to make the difference in Bilbao.

Writing in his TNT sports column, the former midfielder of England said: 'If you look at the recent games between the two teams, then you should probably make Tottenham the small favorites.

“But Manchester United is used to coming into the final. Even in recent bad periods they still reach final and winning trophies and I think that experience is great. '

Despite his support for United, Scholes admitted that he would like to view the Spurs team of Ange Postecoglou and expects them to play better football at night.

“Tottenham will probably be the best team of the night,” he added. “But I just think United will have enough to win.”

United is narrowly favored by British bookmakers, although the strong form of Spurs in Europe, including knockout victories in AZ Alkmaar, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bodo/Glimt, has made them serious contenders.

Both clubs have run heavily in recent weeks to keep their top players for Europe, so that their sad Premier League campaigns are effectively written off.

United started the weekend 15th in the table, one point and one place above tracks. The Red Devils have hit Athletic Bilbao 7-1 over two legs in their semi-final of the Europa League, but did not succeed in beating in Brentford, Bournemouth, Wolves, Newcastle, Man City and Nottingham Forest in their last six domestic trips.

Scholes, who scored 155 goals in 718 performances for United between 1994 and 2013 and 25 trophies, feels uncomfortable with how Ruben Amorim apparently thrown into the Premier League towel.

The Portuguese coach has been in charge since November and the Europa League final will be his 41st game in the United Dugout. Due to a victory, United would qualify for next season's Champions League.

“United should be able to play in two or three games at the same time without sacrificing anything, and they clearly sacrificed the competition,” said Scholes.

“I think it is rather risky to sacrifice the Premier League for the following year Champions League football.”

But Scholes still believes that Amorim has potential in the long term and can get inspiration from the journey of Mikel Arteta in Arsenal.

Arsenal finished eighth in each of the first two seasons of Arteta as a manager, but they have since placed fifth, second and second.

The Gunners probably seem to end this period again, but European success is no longer on the menu after Arteta's men left the Champions League on Wednesday evening by Paris Saint-Germain.

Scholes said: 'I would exchange the season of United for the Arsenal campaign this year, even if they continue and win the Europa League. All day long.

'It would not be a bad example for Amorim to take. He can view Arsenal and simply study what Arteta has done in recent years. It is perhaps the starting block for United. '

Scholes also urged the club to do everything possible to hold captain Bruno Fernandes, which was associated with a possible move to Saudi Arabia.

“Bruno must stay because he is the best player,” he said. 'He is involved in almost everything that United does well. It is pretty clear that they have to keep him and build a team around him. '
