Scotland assistant John Carver insists that George Hirst 'The type of player we need' as the Ipswich striker of England switches from England.
The striker, who has represented England to U20 level, is eligible through his grandfather and is said to have been mentioned on Tuesday in Steve's original team, but this did not happen due to paperwork.
Hirst, who scored his second Premier League goal of the season against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, is one of the three new call-ups for the play-off of the Nations League against Greece.
Carver said that bringing in Hirst, Lennon Miller and James Wilson add something new to the group.
“It is quite refreshing to have a number of new faces and in particular some young boys who have come out of the 9-year-old,” the coach said. “It shows that Steve is willing to give them a chance and there is a path.
“But George is clearly a kind of late arrival. We have been keeping an eye on it for months now.”
The 26-year-old has regularly performed in the Premier League this season and also scored twice in the FA Cup, and Carver says it was clear that Hirst really wanted to change loyalty.
“When we asked him, he was delighted to come to us,” he added.
“That is what we want. We have always said that we want players to come and play for Scotland.
“I know that his father (former Sheffield on Wednesday and Southampton striker David Hirst) played for England, but he wants to play for Scotland and that is the type of player we need.”
