Sean O'Malley submitted Takanori Gomi in 2019 Grapping Match
2019 was the only year that O'Malley was absent at the UFC competition.
A 10-0 prospect at that time, O'Malley tested positively for the performance-promoting Ostarine a second time in June 2016, which canceled a fight with Chito Vera. O'Malley was suspended by USADA for six months and continued to compete at a Quintet Ultra Grappling event in December 2019.
O'Malley struggled against former StrikeForce stars Gilbert Melendez and Hector Lombard together with Pride FC legend Takanori Gomi aka 'The Fireball Kid'.
Less than three minutes after their wrestling match, Gomi shot for a Takedown who had O'Malley his neck for a Guillotine entry. Gomi tapped in a few seconds after the squeeze.
O'Malley was a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when he submitted Gomi, a knockout artist with a wrestling base. Gomi fought the WHOs-WHO in MMA from BJ Penn to Nick Diaz to his younger brother Nate Diaz in the UFC.
Gomi went a stellar 13-1 (1 NC) in Pride FC.
Sean O'Malley has trained with Israel Adesanya
Demetrious Johnson is not the only UFC legend O'Malley has trained for UFC 316.
O'Malley worked on his stand-up, trained with one of the best strikers in the UFC today, former UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya.
The two former champions spar in the gym of O'Malley and received different looks.
“He didn't seem like he came out three losses,” said O'Malley about training with Adesanya on Red Hawk Recap.
'I am usually the long, lanky guy who goes around with people.
“So, for him to be so big … I was like damn, that's wild,” O'Malley added.
