Sean O'Malley has vowed to make a big change as he plans his return to the UFC's top ranks.
The divisive former bantamweight champion lost his title to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306 and is currently working on an octagon comeback. He is a fan favorite for his fighting style, but also receives a lot of criticism for his outspoken style.
Now he's eyeing a big change in his plans as he aims to return to action in early 2025.
Sean O'Malley announces plan to delete social media before UFC returns
A key element of Sean O'Malley's success is his ability to connect with fans on social media to increase his star power. Of course, his striking skills and knockouts against the likes of Aljamain have helped Sterling, but he's also one of the biggest stars in the sport thanks to his online antics.
However, he has stated via Instagram that he plans to 'detox' from the internet in 2025 and will delete his apps to prepare for his upcoming fights. “2025 I'm deleting all my social media from my phone until my next fight,” O'Malley wrote of his story.
“My team will manage my socials. We'll still make content, but I just need a detox from my phone. I will focus on reaching my full potential as an athlete and as a father.”
Sean O'Malley's next fight could be for the world title
According to veteran MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz, O'Malley could be the next contender after UFC 311 when Umar Nurmagomedov takes on newly crowned champion Merab Dvalishvili. The Georgian seemed unsure whether he would even give his undefeated rival a chance and preferred other fights.
But he has succumbed to the UFC and agreed to the fight, with the date set for January. And if the outcome goes against him, Abdelaziz believes Nurmagomedov will give O'Malley the chance to regain the title next.
“I would like Sean O'Malley to do this; take as much time as he wants, and I believe Umar will beat Merab, and then Umar will give him a title shot after losing,” Abdelaziz told ESPN MMA.
“I think Sean O'Malley is one of the biggest stars in the sport, this is a money-making business and I think Sean O'Malley deserves a title shot after losing – you know why? Because Sean O'Malley is making money for everyone in the division, except Merab and Umar.”
