Semedo says Wolves giving everything in relegation battle

Nelson Semedo says that Wolves will “do everything” to secure Premier League survival, while preparing for the Bottom Club St Mary's on Saturday.

Wolves recovered from 1-0 to earn a 1-1 draw with Everton last Saturday, in their first of three games without the suspended Matheus Cunha.

That result, in combination with defeats for Ipswich Town and Leicester City, saw Wolves six points away from the relegation zone.

The OPTA Supercomputer gives the side of Vitor Pereira only a 5% chance of falling, compared to the 96.7% of Ipswich, Leicester's 98.3% and Southampton's 100%.

Asked if the Wolves players believe that they will stay, Semedo said: “Of course we believe a lot. We have to show this faith when we get on the field, and it's what we are going to do.

“We still have 10 games to play, and we are going to give everything from ourselves to ensure that wolves stay in the Premier League.

“It's a long way to go, we know that we have to keep working hard, we have to keep giving 200 percent, because that is the only way to win games and stay in the Premier League.”

Southampton is fighting to prevent the shame from becoming the worst team in the Premier League history.

They have one point less than Derby County had in the same phase of 2007-08, when they finished with only 11 points.

Although Saturday's game is a golden chance for wolves to get further out of trouble, Pereira does not think about it as a must-win.

“When we talk about the final, I think if you start wearing it on your back, this responsibility is a problem,” he said.

“In my experience I prefer to think about the game per game. We can lose against a team at the bottom, or we can win if we play against a team at the top, because that is what happens in this competition.

“This is why this competition is the best in the world.”

Players to watch

Southampton – Aaron Ramsdale

Southampton -goalkeeper Ramsdale has given 48 goals this season in 20 Premier League matches, an average of 2.4 per match.

Of all keepers who have played at least 20 times during a full campaign in the competition, only Wes Foderingham has registered a higher average (2.6 – 79 in 30 games last season).

Wolves-Jean Ricner-Bellegarde

Bellegarde has enjoyed a new life since Pereira brought him into a midfield role, and still suspended with Cunha, wolves will trust his creativity.

Only Cunha (34) has created more chances for open game for Wolves this season than Bellegarde (21) in the Premier League this season, even though the Frenchman only started 14 of his team's 28 games.

Match -forecast – Wolves win

After they won their first two Premier League matches against Wolves in September 2003 and April 2019, Southampton has now lost each of their last four against them at St Mary's.

In general, Wolves won each of their last six Premier League matches against Southampton-Hun longest winning run against an opponent in the competition, and their longest in top matches in general since a seven-match streak against Burnley between 1974 and 2018.

The hosts on Saturday each of their last eight home games in the Premier League lost with a total score of 29-5.

In the English top history, only three games have ever lost nine or more home games in a single season: Birmingham City in 1985-86 (10), Wolves in 2011-12 (nine) and Watford in 2021-22 (11).

After winning their first two Premier League matches under Pereira in December, Wolves won only two of their last 10 (two draws, six defeats), but this is an important chance to get out of the danger.
