The knives had control at Bramall Lane from the start and now have a three -point pillow over Leeds United, which is opposite Swansea City on Saturday.
Ephron Mason-Clark saw the first real opening for Coventry after a lightning-fast counterattack, but his first shot was hit directly at Michael Cooper.
Only three minutes later the visitors were behind. Gustavo Hamer stepped to a free kick just outside the box and hit a wonderful attack in the top corner, so Oliver Dovin had no chance.
Tyrese Campbell doubled United's lead on half an hour of half an hour; The perseverance of Femi Seriki on the right bears bearing fruit while he drove two challenges before he hit a low cross in the box, which Campbell led with a first finish in the net.
Coventry then got another blow when Dovin left a stretcher shortly thereafter, apparently shocking his knee in an attempt to keep the ball, and Bradley Collins was quickly put under pressure after his introduction.
He parried Campbell's shot directly to Anel Ahmedhodzic, although his header was excluded when the first offside was. The goalkeeper then denied brilliant Sydie Peck and told reflexively his header over the bar.
Rhian Brewster took care of the points in the 62nd minute. After he played a two with Ben Brereton Diaz, he focused out of just in the box around the corner.
Coventry got a late comfort, with Jack Rudoni control in Luis Binks' Knik up close, but the visitors stay fifth in the table and watch over their shoulders, with West Brom and Bristol City to play this weekend.

It was a fairly comfortable victory for United, which extended their undefeated series to five games in the competition by following their derby wins on Sheffield on Wednesday with a new victory.
Brewster was the hero in that match, and his goal was put off an impressive game for the knives while giving his first goal in Bramall Lane since January 2022.
He has now contributed to three goals in his last three home games, after he also achieved two assists during that run.
However, Coventry could not get the best from the 11 shots they had – there were only four on goal, while they only created 1.12 expected goals (XG), while United surpassed their 1.73 XG.
