Simeone hails Sorloth impact but still wants more from Atleti striker

Diego Simeone says striker Alexander Sorloth has lived up to Atletico Madrid's expectations in his first season, but he is still hopeful the Norwegian can deliver more.

Sorloth has scored eight goals in 18 league appearances for Atleti since joining from Villarreal, although he was left on the bench as they reached the LaLiga summit by beating Osasuna 1-0 on Sunday.

He had scored in consecutive league matches before that match, including a 96th-minute winner in their 2–1 win over Barcelona and the only goal against Getafe.

“They all know where they stand. It's about the collective and not the individual. Another important thing is the quality of the minutes played,” Simeone told reporters as he looked ahead to Wednesday's Copa del Rey match in Elche.

“Every time Sorloth came off the bench he was phenomenal, and when he started he helped us.

“He gives what we expected from him, and we hope he gives more.”

Simeone confirmed that defender Clement Lenglet is likely to miss the clash with second-division side Elche, where he expects his senior players to take charge.

He said: “There is Koke, Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel and [Antoine] Griezmann too, and having them around is invaluable for a coach.

“They train like they are kids just starting out, and that energy rubs off on their teammates.

“We work by talking openly, being honest about our needs and recognizing their importance to the team. I have no doubt they are ready to compete.”

Simeone, who has managed Atleti for 14 years and guided them to two LaLiga titles and two Europa League crowns, has overseen a new club record 14 appearances.

He downplayed his achievements, saying: “I don't live on praise or criticism. I know my value as a coach and the common goal I share with the players.”

“If I find people who fit together, like the four players I mentioned, then that's real happiness for me.”

Atleti visit Leganes in LaLiga three days after their trip to Elche and then host Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on January 21.
