Simeone laments ‘really bad’ Atletico defeat to Getafe

Diego Simeone remained extremely disappointed by the “bad version” of Atletico Madrid while blocking their chance to move the top of Laliga.

Atletico suffered a late 2-1 defeat to get Getafe, who benefited when Angel Correa was sent away for a studs-up tackle after Alexander Sorloth had given the visitors from the penalty spot.

Getafe fought back thanks to a final gasp, Quickfire Double from Mauro Arambarri, where Atletico was unable to find a late equalizer after his second in the 92nd minute.

Atletico was unbeaten in 24 league matches against Getafe prior to this match (W20 D4), with this defeat ended their longest undefeated series against the same opponent in the top flight.

“The competition offered nothing, it wasn't a good match to watch and a really bad achievement,” Simeone told Dazn.

“From a tactical point of view, each team searched for what suited them best.

“We didn't find what we were looking for, but that was a penalty, then Angel was sent away and … Pouf … it couldn't be.”

With a match in hand, Barcelona is at the top of the competition with 57 points, with Real Madrid drawing level on points with Hansi Flick's side after a 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Atletico is one point behind the pair.

Atletico will be confronted opposite Oude Rivals Madrid on Wednesday in the second stage of their Champions League Round-of-16-significance before organizing Barca in Laliga on Sunday.

“It's 20 minutes since it ended and nobody can be happy. The players are not good because we have not played a good match, but we have to be strong and improve through the game,” Simeone added.

“I don't think it was a matter of attitude, the mental side was okay, but it wasn't a good game of ours.

“Nothing happened in the game. It was a tight game. We had the chance to manage the end better, but it can happen, it's football … it happens …

“Congratulations to the opponent and let's be calm and accept … let's go on.”
