Simeone reveals surprise method of motivating Alvarez & admits surprise over son

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has admitted that he did not expect that son Giuliano Simeone would become an important player this season. Eyebrrauwen were built when after a encouraging but modest season on loan at Alaves, with a serious injury, it became clear that he would stay with Atletico last summer.

Of course the most important addition was Julian Alvarez last summer, who scored a brace against Real Valladolid on Monday evening. He arrived from Manchester City for € 75 million and this season scored 26 goals in 48 games, but Simeone told Relo how he motivated him.

“Julian has a great season. We went looking for that player. We need that player. Especially during the match against Sevilla, and this Monday he took up the role of attacking power of the team. We need those qualities; he competes very well. I think he has 14 goals in La Liga, and we tell him Lewandowi has much more.”

In the meantime, Giuliano has become a supporter this season and he has five goals and seven assists himself – with two to reverse the match against Valladolid in the Metropolitano.

“To be honest, I didn't expect him to perform like that,” Simeone Senior noted.

“I thought he could help us. That's why I thought about having him like another player in the team, but he has a very good season and I hope he can keep it up. Nobody has given him anything, and nobody will give him anything. He knows better than anyone because he knows me intimate.”

Another of the more surprising stories are the goals of Sorloth, which is the second scorer of the team without a normal starter. Simeone was asked how he motivates him.

“Speaking honestly and personally to him, as I do with him,” he explained.

Atletico halved the gap on Monday evening Rivals Real Madrid, making it three points for Los Blancos and seven to Barcelona. Because they count the most from the title race, Monday was a strong memory of the many good versions that came this season, even if it was a difficult run for Los Rojiblancos.
