Slot happy with Liverpool options and does not foresee busy January

Arne Slot is happy with Liverpool's squad and does not expect a busy January transfer window, although the Premier League leaders will continue to monitor the market.

Liverpool have made a stunning start to the Slot era, losing just one of 28 games in all competitions this season (23 wins, four draws).

They have a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League and are in with a chance of an unprecedented quadruple victory, with Tottenham set to face Tottenham in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.

Liverpool was quiet in the transfer market ahead of the season and only brought in Federico Chiesa – who has only played four games – and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was immediately loaned back to Valencia.

Asked whether Liverpool were actively looking for reinforcements at Tuesday's pre-match press conference, Slot told reporters: “It would be a bit strange if I said during the summer holidays that we are very happy with the team and you now have something very would say otherwise.

“But you always look at the market, this club has always looked at the market. I think we did this with the goalkeeper who we don't even have at the moment.”

“If there is an opportunity on the market, this club always tries to secure that opportunity, but the team is in a good place.

“Unfortunately Joe Gomez is injured [and] that means we go from four central defenders to three, but he will be back in a few weeks so I am very happy with the team.

“I think they deserve the trust of the club and of me, if you look at the performances they achieved last season.”

EFL Cup holders Liverpool have progressed from seven of the last nine semi-finals in the competition and could reach consecutive finals for the first time since a run of four between 1981 and 1984.

Liverpool's 23 wins in all competitions this season are at least four more than any other team from Europe's top five leagues (Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have 19 each), behind only Barcelona (76), Chelsea (73) and Bayern Munich (72) have improved their 70 goals.

Slot would not say whether his side will perform at a higher level than Jürgen Klopp's team in the 2023/2024 season, although he believes their performance is in line with their results.

“It is very difficult for me to compare last season with this season,” said Slot. “All I know is that we haven't stolen a point so far.

“All the points we achieved were fully deserved. I think at times we even deserved more than we got when we dropped points.

“That's the best prediction you can have for the second half of the season. I don't know what it was like last season, whether all the results were as expected or fully deserved, or whether there were also a few moments of luck.

“What I do know is that all the points we have achieved this season and all the results we have achieved, in my opinion, were deserved.”
