Slot labels Liverpool ‘mentality’ key after moving two wins away from title

Arne Slot gave the mentality of the Liverpool players as a key to their success, while they removed two victories from the Premier League title.

Liverpool became 2-1 victors after a chaotic encounter against West Ham in Anfield, where the late own goal of Andy Robertson has canceled the 18th minute opener of Luis Diaz.

Virgil van Dijk moved Robertson before the left back passed Alisson, only for the Liverpool captain and then went home a winner of the 89th minute from Alexis Mac Allister's Corner.

Liverpool moved 13 points free from Arsenal, for which six points of their last six games were needed to win the title, and Slot believes that the fighting mentality of his team was the most important engine of their success.

“That is what we have done all season. After the disappointment to be eliminated by PSG, we will appear again, we appear every three days, with this mentality,” Slot told Sky Sports.

“We don't win games in the easy way. The easy way is to take the ball over the ball, pass five times, and we have a goal and the next goal and the next goal.

“If we achieve something this year, it is mainly to do with the mentality that the players have shown. That is what you saw today.”

Sunday marked a memorable day for Mohamed Salah, who celebrated Friday's two -year contract extension by setting up Diaz's simple finish.

Salah's 45th goal-oriented involvement of the Premier League season (27 goals, 18 assists), the record for a 38-game campaign in the history of the competition marked this.

The hosts of Slot, however, struggled on the other side, with Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus who went close before Robertson accidentally went home Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross.

The Liverpool boss recognized the threat of visitors to Graham Potter, who lost their last eight Premier League matches in Anfield with a total score of 20-6.

“Very difficult second half, we needed Alisson because [Lucas] Paqueta and Kudus were incredible throughout the game, “the Dutchman added.

“And then we admitted the 1-1, with its own goal. How much more disappointment can you get after what happened last week?

“Getting the goal with Virgil shows you how many mentality these guys have. It's not just us. I saw the result when I came in, Chelsea vs ippswich, 2-2.

“Nobody wins a football game so easily and because this competition is now so strong, you have to put so much effort into bringing your victories over the line.”

There was still time for Niclas Fullkrug's interruption time to hit the bar with what the level would have been for a 2-2 draw, although Liverpool continued for a vital three points.

Their 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League is their largest after 32 or more competitions of a competition campaign since the last day of 2019-2020 (18), in their last title win.

Liverpool next visit Leicester City, and a victory there would offer them the opportunity to seal the TopFlight crown at home on Tottenham on 27 April.

“The entire season has been difficult for us, every victory has been really difficult, except two more victories,” concluded Slot.

“The last three games have shown us how difficult it is to win a football match, let alone one at the end of the season. We will go against Leicester again next week.”
