The British football police unit leads the investigation into the insulting messages aimed at Michael Oliver – and has already spoken to social media companies because it is responsible for the responsible person.
Oliver became the target of online trolls after his controversial decision to send Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the UKFPU said: “Officers of the UKFPU started an investigation after a number of offensive reports were aimed at a referee after a Premier League match.”

“Questions are in the early stages and officers work closely with social media providers, including Facebook and X, to identify those who are responsible for the messages.”
PGMOL published a statement on Sunday. It said: “We were shocked by the threats and abuse aimed at Michael Oliver after the Wolverhampton Wanderers against Arsenal match,” the PGMOL said in a statement.
“No civil servant may be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the disgusting attacks that have been aimed at Michael and his family for the past 24 hours.”
Arsenal won the match 1-0.
