Son Heung-min admits Europa League final might be last chance to end Spurs trophy woe

The captain of Tottenham has never won a trophy for his 10 years at the club, but he has the chance to switch the side to a desire for success on Wednesday evening

Son-Heung Min is determined to write history with Tottenham by beating Manchester United to lift the Europa League trophy.

The last trophy of Tottenham was the League Cup in 2008 under Juande Ramos, while their last European title was the UEFA Cup in 1984. Against that background, Captain Son sworn to end the 17-year-old waiting of the club for silverware.

“I hope we can turn it into a historic day that I will never forget,” Son said. “It would be very special and be a historic moment.

“I have been here for 10 years and I just want to win a trophy that nobody did at the time. So it will be a huge day for me, for all players, the club and the fans. If we can win the trophy, we can change the mentality and history and hopefully win other trophies.

“I don't have to motivate the players just because it is a final. I will just tell them that we have to stay together, be calm and do the right things.”

Son knows that Spurs will get the full support of their former striker Harry Kane, who won the first title of his career this season when Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga.

Although Son has not spoken with Kane in the construction of the final, he knows that his best friend will root for his former club to win.

“Harry is my best friend and it was a huge honor to play next to him,” Son said. “When he won his first title, we had a chat about it, but he is already on vacation and I am sure he doesn't want me to text him! But I am sure Harry will support us from his vacation.”

Son has left for a year to his contract and admitted that the final could be his last shot to win a trophy with Spurs, so he is determined not to be on the losing side.

“We never know the future,” Son said. “We can win and play in the Champions League next season and maybe we can come to other finals.

“But what we have now is real – the final we are going to play. This can be my last chance or there can be another chance, but I just want to cancel the trophy and celebrate with the boys.”
