Match report

Martin Odegaard scored an 89th minute Thunderbolt to help Arsenal to end their Premier League campaign on a high, and sealed a 2-1 win over Southampton in St. Mary's Stadium on Sunday.

Kieran Tierney, who made his last performance for Arsenal prior to his return to Boyhood Club Celtic, gave the Gunners Trouw a suitable farewell and broke the impasse just before half -time with a smart finish on the nearby pole of Ben White's Low Cross.

Gabriel Martinelli has set up Mikel Merino twice with Pinpoint Kruisen from the left wing, but the Spaniard was unable to test in Aaron Ramsdale up close.

Despite seeing more of the ball, Arsenal did not succeed in their advantage and Southampton hit back after the break, thanks to a towering Ross Stewart header in the 56th minute.

The saints were much improved in the second half, but had to dig deep to withstand the pressure of Arsenal, with Charlie Taylor blocking a powerful effort from Oleksandr Zinchenko before Bukayo Saka saw a goal excluded for offside.

But with the Ebbing match to a draw, Odegaard shot home from 25 meters to ensure that the Gunners signed with a victory, so that they retain second place.

Arsenal ends the season with 72 points, one place for Manchester City, while Southampton finished 10 points on drift at the bottom.

Data Debrief: Arsenal ends strong runners-up

With their victory over Southampton, Arsenal has now finished second for the third consecutive Premier League campaign-the fifth time in the history of top flight that a team is second three years in a row, with Arsenal the first side to do this twice (also 1998-99 to 2000-01).

The Gunners have been a defensive solid unit this period, who have admitted no more than twice than twice this season in one of their 58 games in all competitions.

This only marks the third time in the Premier League era that a party has completed a whole campaign without giving three or more goals in a match (also Manchester United in 2007-08 and 2017-18).

They ended the Sunday game with an expected goals (XG) a total of 2.20, an accurate representation of their dominance, while Southampton could only manage 0.63 xg.

The saints are now the first team in the Premier League history that loses 30 games in a season, and indeed the first to lose 30 games in a 38-game top campaign.
