Southampton: The unwanted PL records relegated Saints could still break in 24/25

Writing was on the wall for Southampton – and had been for a while.

They became the first team in the Premier League history that was relegated with no fewer than seven games of the remaining season, after their 3-1 defeat in Tottenham on April 6, their 25th competition-nuclear.

That day, Saints also became the third team that lost no fewer than 25 of their first 31 games from a top campaign, after Sunderland in 2005/06 and Sheffield United in 2020/21 (both also 25).

It was quite the contrast with last season, when an undefeated run of 22 games in the championship helped helping their successful bid for promotion to the Premier League via a play-off definitive victory over Leeds at Wembley.

The harsh reality is that many now talk about Southampton as one of the worst teams in the history of Premier League.

With that in mind, we look at the unwanted records that they can still break between now and the end of the season on 25 May …

Lowest cumulative points total

What is the current record? Derby set the record for the lowest cumulative points in total in the Premier League history in the 2007/08 season when they only took 11 points.

Could Southampton break it? No, but they can match it. So far, Saints have picked up only 11 points, but the last of it – at West Ham previous time – out – ensured that she matched the record layer of Derby. They still have five games to beat it and based on their points per match of 0.31, they are on track to end up at 13 points. However, that would still be the second lowest return.

The least points won at home

What is the current record? Sunderland only collected seven points of 19 games during the 2005/06 season, consisting of one win, four draw and 14 defeats.

Could Southampton break it? Yes. Saints only have five points of their 16 games at St Mary's so far, consisting of one win, two draw and 13 defeats.

Least home wins

What is the current record? Sunderland (2005/06) and Derby (2007/08) have both only recorded one Premier League -homewin.

Could Southampton break it? No, but they can match it. Their only home win of the season so far came on November 2 when they defeated Everton 1-0 at St Mary's.

Most defeats

What is the current record? Factoring in just 38-game seasons, Sunderland (2005/06), Derby (2007/08) and Sheffield United (2020/21) each lost 29 games.

Could Southampton break it? Yes. Saints have lost 26 of their matches this season and were able to set a new record with five more games to play.

Most home reports

What is the current record? Watford lost 15 of their 19 home games during the 2021/22 campaign, when they were banned under Roy Hodgson – the third permanent manager of the Hornets.

Could Southampton break it? Yes. Saints have lost 13 times this season in the competition in St Mary's. They have three home games left and will set a new record if they each of these losses.

Longest Winless Streak

What is the current record? Derby has the record for the longest Windless Streak in the Premier League, which started on September 22, 2007 and 32 games. From a technical point of view, it is still underway because they have not returned to the top flight since then.

Could Southampton break it? No, but their Run of 22 without a victory between 12 March 2023 and 2 November 2024 is the third longest in the history of Premier League. That run also broke a long -term club record, which was previously in 20 games, completed between August and December 1969.

Worst target difference in a season

What is the current record? Derby (2007/08) and Sheffield United (2023/24) hold this record together, each ending with minus 69.

Could Southampton break it? Yes. Their current goal difference is at least 54.

Who do they have to play this season?

Where is it predicted that they will end?
