Southgate awarded knighthood in King’s New Year Honours list

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been knighted in the King's New Year Honors list.

The 54-year-old resigned in July after leading England to their first final on foreign soil at the 2024 European Championship, in which they were defeated 2-1 by Spain.

The defeat to Spain came in a second successive European Championship final under Southgate's tenure, with their first appearance at Wembley in Euro 2020.

Southgate managed the national team for eight years after replacing Sam Allardyce in September 2016 and taking them to four major tournaments.

Under him, England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the two second places at the European Championships.

He took charge of a total of 102 England games during his tenure, winning 61 of them, with the team scoring 223 goals.

His fourteen major tournament wins are the most by any manager in England's history, while they reached more finals (two) in four attempts than in their first 23 World Cup and European Championship appearances.

He is the fourth England manager to be knighted, after Walter Winterbottom, World Cup winner Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson, who took the team to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup.

“He brought our fans closer to the team than ever before, stood up for what he believed in and inspired players to share his pride in representing England,” said FA chairman Debbie Hewitt.

“It was a privilege to know the man and the manager. All of us who experienced his thoughtfulness, dedication and leadership are pleased with this great news.”
