Spence on why Spurs boss Postecoglou changed his mind about starting him

Spence failed to impress Postecoglou in the head coach's first summer at the club and was loaned out to Leeds United and Serie A side Genoa. Recently, however, the defender has returned to the first team and even scored an assist in his last two games against Southampton and Manchester United.

When asked why Postecoglou started to believe in him, Spence responded by saying that he has matured in his time away from the club and that he is always ready to go when called upon.

'I'm not really sure. I just grew as a person, I guess. You learn a lot during loan periods, so when I came back I really got started with it, with the right mentality. I'm happy to be here.

“It's just something where you have to stay ready at all costs and show what you can do when you get the chance. That's what I do and I'm happy.”

The 24-year-old has made seven appearances so far this season, more than any other season at the club. Spence admits he is ready for more action this season, especially with Spurs in the midst of an injury crisis.

“I just want to keep going. I'm happy with the assist and hopefully I'll continue to help the team, keep going, play well and hopefully we can keep winning. Sometimes it's hard (not playing), but you have to stay ready.

“So my thanks go to my teammates for helping me stay ready, the coaching staff for making sure I stay ready and when I get the chance, doing what I do.

“To get an assist and get an assist in the last game, I'm happy with myself.”

Tottenham are coming off a win against United in the EFL Cup and Postecoglou is amazed at his team's performance levels, which have not dipped despite a plethora of injuries plaguing the team.

“It's just unbelievable,” said the manager. “These are ten players from a senior list, and it's just ridiculous and the fact that we're still putting in this level of performance with guys, Archie (Gray), Djed, guys like this, I mean.

“I believe we are experiencing tremendous growth during this period that may not become apparent until later, but I just think there is so much good in it right now, even though it is still a difficult period.”
